A Quick History of The Lion King Musical

The Lion King premiered on Broadway in 1997 at the New Amsterdam Theatre, after having a very positive reception in its preview at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis. In 2006, the production moved theaters just two blocks away, to the Minskoff Theatre, the musical’s current home.

It is Broadway's third longest-running show in history after The Phantom of The Opera and Chicago, and it has the highest-grossing box office record on Broadway with over $1 billion dollars. Since 2002, The Lion King has been produced in various parts of the world, captivating audiences with its innovative puppetry, intricate costumes, and breathtaking music.

The original run of the show was directed by Julie Taymor, who also designed the costumes and co-designed the masks and puppetry. Just like in the movie, the musical's score was composed by Elton John and Tim Rice, with additional music and lyrics by Lebo M., Mark Mancina, and Hans Zimmer.

The Lion King musical has won numerous accolades, including six Tony Awards, eight Drama Desk Awards, six Outer Critics Circle Awards, and one Theatre World Award.

Production of the Lion King Musical
