For every home game of the NFL’s Houston Texans
that occurs at NRG Stadium, there’s a massive concert, a monster truck rally or some other exciting event on the schedule as well. The stadium is one of the most frequently used large-scale venues in the Houston area, and it boasts the NFL’s first retractable roof, which is made up of two massive panels that meet at the 50-yard line.
The Texans are the main occupants of NRG Stadium Houston, but it was also designed for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which takes place over three weeks in March. Ground-level facilities include stalls for livestock. As for other sports, the stadium has hosted college and high school football games, soccer matches, NCAA Basketball Tournament games, professional wrestling and motocross races. Several concerts have also taken place at the stadium since it was completed, including performances by the Rolling Stones, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney and Beyoncé.
Heading out from Houston, hop on Interstate 610 and head south—the stadium sits directly off the highway. In regards to the surrounding area, the venue is a bit of a lone ranger. Not many restaurants or bars are in the immediate vicinity, which is why most fans eat at the tailgate, during the game or before heading out. The stadium is situated within the expansive NRG Park, which contains several parking lots, but these often sell out well in advance of football season.
Tailgating is enthusiastically encouraged by the venue, and each parking permit holder is allowed up to 10 tailgate guest passes, which allow fans to enter the lot on foot. Lots open four hours before kickoff. Before entering the stadium, guests must pass a security checkpoint. Items such as noisemakers, inflatables, professional camera equipment, and outside food and drinks are prohibited.
