History of Allegiant Stadium
The story begins in January 2016 when Las Vegas Sands, along with Majestic Realty and UNLV, contemplated the development of a stadium on a 42-acre site owned by UNLV. The Las Vegas Raiders, were already flirting with the idea to relocate from Oakland and missed out on relocating back to Los Angeles as the Chargers and the Rams had just made City of Angels their permanent home. This set the stage for a potential partnership.
Raiders owner Mark Davis explored the potential of a Las Vegas move, intrigued by the proposed stadium plan and visited the future building site. This move was motivated by the team's struggle to secure a new stadium in Oakland, culminating in an impasse. To relocate to Las Vegas, a new stadium was imperative, as Sam Boyd Stadium proved inadequate for NFL standards. Moving cities was not out of the question for Davis.
The original budget for the construction of Allegiant Stadium was $1.8 billion. However, due to unforeseen costs and delays, the final cost of the stadium was $2 billion. Of this amount, $750 million was financed by public funds from a special tax on hotel rooms in the Las Vegas area, and $1.1 billion was financed by the Raiders.
The turning point came in March 2017 when NFL owners overwhelmingly approved the Raiders' move to Las Vegas. Bank of America replaced Adelson's funding, ensuring the project's financial viability. Construction began with a groundbreaking ceremony in November 2017, featuring notable figures from the NFL, politics, and entertainment. The stadium, dubbed "The Death Star" by Mark Davis, finally opened in September 2020, marking the beginning of a new era for Las Vegas sports.
The first Raiders game at the new Allegiant Stadium came on the 21 of September 2020 in a 34-24 win against the New Orleans Saints. That would be just one of the two games the Raiders won at home that season as they failed to make the playoffs with a 8-8 record.
Allegiant Stadium was designed by MANICA Architecture, a 10-level domed stadium with a silver and black exterior that features light-up strips installed by YESCO1. The design was inspired by the sleek and gradual curves of a futuristic luxury vehicle, and the exterior is reminiscent of the distinctive lines of a luxury sports car2.
The stadium’s most notable feature is its cable net truss system, which supports the translucent ETFE roof. This roof is made up of seven acres of ETFE panels, which are lightweight and durable, allowing natural light to enter the stadium. The roof can also be opened to allow for ventilation and cooling.
In addition to these features, Allegiant Stadium also boasts:
- A retractable natural grass playing field, which can be moved inside the stadium for outdoor events.
- Large operable walls that open to spectacular views of the Las Vegas Strip.
- A state-of-the-art sound system and video board.
- A variety of premium seating options, including luxury suites, club level seats, and field boxes.
The stadium also has a 275-foot (84 m) media mesh video screen facing Interstate 151. The north endzone area in front of the retractable windows contains a large torch that houses a flame in honor of Al Davis, the late long-time owner of the Raiders1. The torch is 85 feet (26 m) tall and is currently the largest 3D printed object in the world.
Allegiant Stadium is not only technologically advanced but also sustainable. It incorporates several sustainable features such as solar panels and rainwater collection systems. With its beauty, functionality, sustainability, and innovative design features, Allegiant Stadium stands as an impressive structure that will surely be a popular destination for fans for many years to come.
