At the time of its opening in 1903, the New Amsterdam Theatre was the largest playhouse on Broadway. The theater fell on hard times during the Great Depression, closing in the 1930s before being converted to a film house. In 1997, it reopened thanks to a partnership with Disney Theatrical Productions, which brought such hits as The Lion King, Mary Poppins and Aladdin to the stage.

For visitors who are brave enough to drive in Manhattan, nearby parking can be found at the 1411 Broadway parking garage at 136 West 40th Street. For everyone else, the easiest way to get to the theater is by NYC subway. The closest stop is Times Square-42nd Street. The theater is located between 7th and 8th avenues.

The theater’s seating arrangement is more cozy than spacious. While small bags are allowed, there may not be much room for them—although visitors can shed jackets at the coat check. There are concessions on the main level of the theater, and restrooms are located down a spiral staircase and by the elevator. Visitors are advised to arrive early since shows generally begin right on time. Nearby attractions include Madame Tussauds, Times Square, Grand Central Station and Bryant Park.
