Korpiklaani is a folk metal band haling from Lahti, Finland. Originally formed under the name Shamaani Duo in 1993, the group began writing and recording solely folk music before turning metal. They released one album, Hunka Lunka (1996), before changing their name to Shaman in 1996. Shaman used more Sámic musical elements than Shamaani Duo had done previously, and they released two full length albums, Idja (1999) and Shamániac (2002). Their music featured yoik singing, shamanic drums, synthesizers and humppa. The band went under one final major evolution in 2003 when they changed their name Korpiklaani, transitioning their music style to more conventional folk metal with folk and thrash vocals instead of yoiking and replacing the synthesizer with real folk instruments. The name Korpiklaani means “Backwoods Clan” in the Finnish language, with “korpi” meaning dark old forest.
