Few experienced a quicker rise to stardom than the ultra-talented Lea Michele during the Glee era. While she was already a respected Broadway performer, she was a relative unknown in mainstream culture. Then Glee broadcast her immense talent to the world, and she became a star.

Lea Michele’s Broadway History

Before Glee, Lea Michele already had a blossoming Broadway career, and she returned to Broadway after the show.

Spring Awakening

After having a variety of Broadway roles starting at the age of eight, she originated the role of Wendla Bergmann in Spring Awakening on Broadway, which won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score. Although she was not nominated for a Tony, her performance was widely acclaimed.

Funny Girl

Fifteen years after finishing Spring Awakening, Michele returned to Broadway in 2022. Many found her starring in the revival of Funny Girl a sort of kismet. Her character on Glee, Rachel Berry, had starred in a revival of Funny Girl as well. When Lea Michele got the part almost ten years later, it was a prime example of life imitating art.

Reviews praised Lea Michele’s take on the character of Fanny Brice, but she was not eligible for a Tony for the role. Since she was a replacement rather than a part of the cast from the beginning, the producers of the show would have had to petition for her eligibility, which they did not do.

Chess: The Musical

After closing Funny Girl in 2023, Michele had a few short touring stints and took some personal time off before returning to the Broadway stage in Chess: The Musical on October 15th, 2025, at the Imperial Theatre.

Everything to Know About Chess: The Musical

Chess: The Musical made its stage show debut in 1986 and opened on Broadway in 1988. The show ran for 68 shows before closing in 1988 as well. The 2025-2026 revival is the first time the show has been featured on Broadway in 37 years.

The show runs on the typical grueling Broadway schedule, with evening shows every Tuesday through Saturday as well as matinees on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

When to See Lea Michele in Chess

As of now, aside from a few planned outages, Lea Michele is expected to perform all eight shows a week until June 21st, 2026, making that 111 planned shows.

Lea Michele will not be performing April 1st through 5th, or the matinee on April 11th. Unplanned outages are always possible, though uncommon, and give understudies a chance to shine.

How Long Will Lea Michele Star

Lea Michele is currently slated to star through the end of the show's scheduled run, which ends on June 21st, 2026. However, this could be subject to change, as with any Broadway show.

Could She Win a Tony?

The Tony nominees will be announced on May 5th, 2026. Will Lea Michele be nominated? No one can be sure, but after her widespread critical acclaim in Funny Girl and initial praise in Chess, it is certainly possible, and some believe, overdue.
