Alt-J (stylized as alt-J) is an English indie rock band. Their story began in 2007, when founding members Joe Newman and Gus Unger-Hamilton met at Leeds University recording songs in their dorm rooms. Alt-J’s unique musical style and distinct sound stem from these early days, when playing in student halls meant noise had to be kept to a minimum and they were unable to use bass guitars or bass drums. The band has come a long way from their humble beginnings, releasing three studio albums, winning several awards in the UK and Australia, and even earning themselves a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album in 2015. Their latest album entitled Relaxer was released in June 2017.
