Tri City Storm hockey enters 2026-27 looking to build on a season that ended in the first round, a 2025-26 run that saw the Storm clinch a playoff spot as the West's No. 6 seed before Sioux City swept the best-of-three series. Goaltender Michal Pradel and defenseman Bode Laylin earned All-USHL Third Team honors last season, giving Tri-City a returning core to build around. USHL Western

The USHL's Western Conference remains one of junior hockey's toughest gauntlets, pitting Tri-City against seven other clubs across the Midwest and Plains, including Fargo, Sioux Falls, Sioux City, Waterloo, Des Moines, Omaha, and in-state rival Lincoln. That Lincoln series carries the most weight of any on the schedule, with the two Nebraska programs squaring off nine times in 2025-26 alone, more meetings than Tri-City had with any other opponent. Sioux Falls has been the conference's model program in recent seasons, while Waterloo and Fargo have both produced deep playoff runs. Every Western club plays a nearly identical slate, so small margins tend to decide seeding.

Tri-City Storm at Viaero Center

Viaero Center events have anchored Storm hockey in Kearney since the arena opened under a different name in 2000, later becoming Viaero Center after a 2009 naming-rights deal. The building seats right around 4,047 fans for hockey, a capacity that keeps the crowd close to the glass and loud through the third period. Community bookings fill the calendar around Storm games, but hockey nights remain the building's signature draw. The rink has hosted a Clark Cup championship team, giving it a piece of USHL history. Road trips to Fargo and Sioux Falls carry extra weight given both programs' recent playoff pedigree.
