Hockey in the Tri-Cities region has been built around one franchise since 1988, when a relocated New Westminster Bruins club took the ice under a new name. Navy, red, silver, and white mark the jerseys today, a scheme that's evolved over the decades, along with a physical brand of play built on tight, one-goal games. WHL Western

The Americans compete in the U.S. Division of the WHL's Western Conference, a stretch of the league defined by tight travel and tighter games against divisional rivals. None of those matchups carries more weight than the annual series against the Spokane Chiefs, a border rivalry that spans decades and includes a New Year's Eve clash each season. Goaltender Carey Price built rivalry lore during his run in Kennewick from 2002 to 2007, and his 2026 Hockey Hall of Fame induction adds to the franchise's pedigree. Coming off a 26-36-5-1 finish, Tri-City missed the playoffs and will look for a faster start through the U.S. Division this fall.

Tri-City Americans at Toyota Center

A rink built specifically for junior hockey has hosted every Americans home game in Kennewick since it opened in November 1988. Toyota Center seats close to 5,700 for hockey and keeps sightlines tight to the ice on both ends, a setup that amplifies crowd noise during power plays. The 2026-27 slate runs the full 68-game WHL schedule, opening at home before wrapping up next spring on the road in Spokane. The Americans and the Chiefs meet eight times this season, more than any other opponent, keeping the rivalry in constant rotation. Tri-City Americans Ed Chynoweth Cup Playoffs

Postseason history includes one trip to the WHL championship series, in 2009-10, but the Ed Chynoweth Cup has never come home to Kennewick. Most recently, in 2024-25, the team qualified as the No. 7 seed and lost in five games to the Victoria Royals. A rebuilding year kept the roster out of the 2025-26 playoff field, but the young core gained experience that could fuel a stronger push. Another run through the U.S. Division bracket would mark progress for a franchise chasing its first title.
