Mavis Staples is an R&B and gospel/soul singer from Chicago, Illinois. Staples first rose to prominence with her family group, ‘The Staple Singers’, who toured all across America singing gospel and soul songs in full harmony. They were integral in the civil rights movement, carrying on Martin Luther King’s message through their music. They put out a number of hit singles and were wildly popular and influential. Staples’ solo career has been equally as successful and impressive. She has collaborated with numerous popular musicians and continues to perform live today.
