R&B singer/songwriter Ella Mai first stepped onto the scene in 2014 when she competed on The X Factor as part of a trio called Arize. The group did not advance past the initial audition for the judges, breaking up shortly after and sending Mai out on her own. The following year, she uploaded a four-track solo EP of original music to SoundCloud, sharing short clips in videos posted to her Instagram page as well. It was there that Mai garnered widespread attention, including the attention of producer DJ Mustard. Her debut six-track contemporary R&B EP Time followed shortly after, featuring Mai’s casually commanding voice and a collaboration with Ty Dolla $ign on the song “She Don’t.” She quickly followed up with two more EPs, Change and Ready in early 2017, the latter of which spawned the hit track “Boo’d Up” which cracked the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song would later appear on her debut album, which was released later that year in October.
