Yakov Smirnoff is a Soviet-born, American stand-up comedian. He rose to prominence throughout the mid-to-late 1980s, appearing in several films and tv sitcoms. Smirnoff’s humor combines a mockery of life under Communism and consumerism in the US, as well as wordplay and the misunderstanding of American phrases/culture all marked by his catchphrase; “And I thought, ‘What a country!’” His comedic style is grounded within his mission to “experience happiness and teach it with passion through comedy and sensitivity.”
