Boston-based rockers Aerosmith took over the world of rock and roll when they first stepped onto the scene in the early 1970s. The quintet rose to fame on the strength of their blues-driven, guitar-heavy rock and roll, setting the style and sound of both heavy metal and hard rock for the decades that followed. Aerosmith’s ability to pull off power ballads as well as rock and roll resonated with fans of all genres, placing them at the forefront of popular music throughout the 1970s. Eventually, drugs and alcohol abuse took their toll on the band, and by the 1980s they had all but fallen off the radar. By the end of the decade, however, the group would make one of the most spectacular comebacks in rock history, returning to their rightful place at the top of the charts with a string of wildly successful albums and music videos. Aerosmith is the best-selling American hard rock band of all time, selling over 150 million records worldwide. The rock legends have earned 12 multi-platinum, 18 platinum, and 25 gold albums, holding the record for most total certifications by an American band. They have been Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees since 2001, with principal songwriters Steven Tyler and Joe Perry both inductees of the Songwriters Hall of Fame since 2013.
