Chastity Belt formed in Walla Walla, Washington in 2010 by members Julia Shapiro, Annie Truscott, Gretchen Grimm, and Lydia Lund. The band boasted a sound that gave a nod to the moody guitar-based vibes of the early 1990s grunge scene, pairing it with witty lyrics that often incorporated feminist satire on their debut album No Regrets in 2013. Over time, principal songwriter Shapiro would dive a bit deeper into personal themes, with their sound shifting towards a more nuances and sophisticated direction. Chastity Belt released a total of three albums before entering a brief hiatus in 2018. Their self-titled fourth album was released in late 2019.
