Thomas Rhett Akins Jr., known professionally as Thomas Rhett, is a Grammy-nominated country music singer and songwriter. The son of fellow country music star Rhett Akins, Thomas Rhett grew up surrounded by country music, sharing company with some of the biggest names in the genre like Tim McGraw and Brooks & Dunn.
His name forever connects him with his father, who earned a handful of Top 20 hits throughout the mid-90s. Those tracks, including the Top 5 "That Ain't My Truck" and the number one hit single "Don't Get Me Started," impacted the country music genre, inspiring countless acts like Luke Bryan and Dallas Davidson.
Thomas Rhett learned to play drums while in junior high, eventually going on to perform with his father for gigs on the road. By the time he was in high school, he was playing local shows in his own band.
Although he seemed to be a on clear path towards a future in music, Rhett had shifted gears by the end of high school. College saw him exploring a variety of interests and discovering new possible career paths outside of the music world.
The change in plans didn't last long, and Rhett dropped out of at the age of 20 years old. Despite his attempts to avoid it, music seemed to be a central part of his destiny.
“I think I’ve been directed here for a reason, I still don’t know why," Rhett Shared.
"I don’t know if it’s to be some big star or if it’s to make a difference in somebody’s life along the way or to make somebody’s Friday night entertaining. [...] It’s a journey, and I’m learning something new every step along the way.”
In 2010, Rhett teamed up with country superstar Jason Aldean to co-write the song "I Ain't Ready to Quit." The track was featured on Aldean's fourth studio album My Kinda Party, which earned a Grammy nomination and became the best-selling country album of 2011.
Rhett's involvement with the record-breaking, double-platinum album helped open even more doors for the young country star, and he was quickly signed to his first major record label. His debut single "Something To Do With My Hands" arrived in 2012.
Rhett's debut single introduced fans to the singer/songwriter's unique style and sound. His solid country foundation features a distinct urban flair, especially evident on his second single, "Beer With Jesus."
“Country, rock and hip-hop were what I was raised on,” Thomas Rhett says. “It’s a strange combination, but it all leaks into what I write.”
Both "Something To Do With My Hands" and "Beer With Jesus" landed spots within the Top 30 on the Hot Country Songs chart. A third single, "It Goes Like This," topped the Country Airplay chart, peaking at the number two spot on the Hot Country Songs chart.
Rhett released three additional albums over the next few years, including Grammy-nominated albums Life Changes (2017) and Center Point Road (2019). Of his four studio albums, Rhett has scored a total of nineteen singles on the Billboard Hot Country and Country Airplay charts, with fifteen number ones on the latter.
