Merle Haggard is a country musician from Oildale, California, born in 1937. Haggard was a landmark in the popular 1970’s outlaw country music scene, and remained true to his roots for decades following. The outlaw country scene, made popular by Willie Nelson, included the ‘Bakersfield sound’, which is unique to the movement and is characterized as being more raw than the cleaned up, country pop scene popular in Nashville. Haggard is a proud member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, and will go down as a legend and one of the most influential country musicians of all time.
