For the second straight week, Wicked claimed the No. 1 spot for the week’s top selling Broadway musical, followed once again by Aladdin and The Lion King. Wicked holds the top spot as cast members say goodbye to Peter Scolari and Michael Genet and hello to actors PJ Benjamin and Chad Jennings, who will take over as the Wizard and Doctor Dillamond, respectively. With excitement surrounding the musical’s newcomers, it’s no wonder fans continue to flock to the Broadway mainstay, which debuted in 2003.
Broadway Tickets Sales Remain Steady
This week proved Disney-inspired classics have a place in theater-goers’ hearts. While Aladdin hit Broadway in 2014, The Lion King has been a mainstay for 19 years on stage. Despite the age gap, Aladdin and The Lion king have maintained their spots near the top of the Broadway charts, attracting fans of all ages eager to see classic musical renditions.
Also in keeping with last week’s charts, Hamilton held steady its No. 5 spot — this time in the midst of the ‘America the Beautiful’ performance during Sunday’s big game, carried out by Hamilton’s original Schuyler Sisters. Rounding out this week’s top five is The Book of Mormon, the nine-time Tony Award winning comedic musical.
Just missing this week’s top five list was Dear Evan Hansen, which made its Broadway debut just over one year ago.
