FedExField Insider's Guide

The massive FedExField is based in Landover, Maryland and is home to the Washington Commanders NFL team, a title that has catalyzed a series of name changes and geographical transitions throughout its history. The stadium was built as a replacement for the team’s prior venue, Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Washington, D.C., which was too small. It opened its doors in 1997 under the name Jack Kent Cooke Stadium after the Commanders’ recently deceased owner. In 1999, the facility sold its naming rights to FedEx, and it became the stadium fans know and love today.

FedExField hosts the annual Prince George’s Classic college football game, Commanders games, soccer games, and concerts. Although the facility has never sold out an entire stadium, it also has never had a home football game black out on local television, as it does not account for premium seating when calculating sellouts. For six years (2004-10), FedExField held the largest stadium capacity in the NFL with over 91,000 seats until it was reduced.

Prepare for the next big game or concert with this insider’s guide, which features all things FedExField, including tips on parking and interesting facts!

FedExField Insider Tips

Parking At FedExField

If you’re driving to a game or concert, you’ll have to pay for parking at one of the nearby lots. FedExField is located in a suburban area, meaning there is ample space for parking. The lots are spread out around the area for easy access no matter which way you’re coming from. On game days, we suggest reserving parking in advance on the FedExField website as spots can be tough to come by.

The lot price for the best parking lots at FedExField are as follows:

  • 1019 Brightseat Road: $35 (.5 miles away, 10-minute walk)
  • Redzone Lot: $55 (.3 miles, 5-minute walk)
  • Green Section: $60 (.3 miles away, 6-minute walk)
  • Orange Section: $65 (.2, 5-minute walk)
  • Bus/RV Lot: $100 (.7 miles, 13-minute walk)
  • Gray Lot: Varies with cash only (.7 miles, 13-minute walk)

Purple, Orange and Green parking lots open 4 hours prior to kickoff and the RedZone Lot opens 5 hours prior. Port-o-lets are provided throughout the parking lots.

All parking permits are valid for one parking space and must be displayed on your vehicle at all times or you may get towed. Each lot has a designated roadway that you must enter on in order to access it. You can use the mobile app Waze to help direct you to your specific lot.

Parking on Draft Day and Draft Day Dash will be in Lot A. You should enter from Commanders Road or Garret A. Morgan Boulevard as Medical Center Drive will be closed.

Other Ways to Get To FedExField

If you’d rather skip the hassle of driving and dealing with parking and traffic, Maryland public transportation has got you covered. You can hop on the Metro Blue or Silver Lines to the Morgan Boulevard Metro Station. From there, turn left onto Garrett Morgan Boulevard and follow the sidewalk for less than a mile to FedExField.

Go to the WMTA official website and use their Metro Trip planner to map a route from your closest Metro station or bus stop.

You can also opt to take a ridesharing service like Uber or Lyft. Uber is the official rideshare partner of the Washington Commanders. Drop-off and pick-up locations are conveniently located at the Prince George County Sports & Learning Complex across from the FedExField lots, a short walk to Gate D.

FedExField Tailgating

If you’re looking to have some fun before a game, tailgating is permitted on all the FedExField lots. You can use grills, coolers, chairs, tables, etc. for tailgating. Fans have the option of tailgating in more than one parking space in designated areas at the back of the parking lots; otherwise you must stay within your single allotted space at the front of the parking lots.

We suggest you use the RedZone Lot to tailgate, which has extra wide parking spaces. It also opens on hour earlier than the other lots and has a dedicated roadway to enter/exit which helps with any traffic delays.

FedExField Security

The security process has been reported to lead to delays, especially on game days. In order to ensure the safety of guests, everyone entering the field will be subject to a security screening.

Make sure you leave these items at home as they won’t be allowed through the gates:

  • Backpacks, gym bags, duffel bags, diaper bags, packages, briefcases, purses, fanny packs, etc.

  • Food and beverages

  • Seat cushions with zippers or pockets

  • Umbrellas (ponchos are available for sale at certain merchandise areas)

  • Containers and bottles

  • Animals (except for certified guide dogs assisting disabled guests)

  • Whistles, horns and other noise makers

  • Weapons, firearms, illegal substances

  • Folding chairs and strollers

Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12” x 6” x 12” will be allowed through. You can also bring a one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar). Small clutch bags are permissible, if they are approximately 4.5” x 6.5.”

Fans say that there should be a higher presence of security within the stadium as it is sometimes difficult to get a hold of someone for assistance. The bag checking process is typically very smooth.

FedExField Food & Concessions

Fans have stated that the prices for concessions were average for a large stadium, but expensive compared to the norm. There are a diverse range of food options available of average-to-low quality.

Guests have noticed that there are less food options on the higher levels of the stadium. In addition, the lines for food and restrooms are lengthy, and a lot of the televisions are kept off so fans can’t view the games while waiting. We suggest arriving with your bellies full and maybe buying a snack if you feel the need to munch on something.

If you want the full game day experience, we suggest these concessions highlights with the best food for the best prices:

  • DC Stir Fry (section 120, 138): serves Hottodoggu, Char Sui Chicken Bowl, Bulogogi Beef Bowl, Tuna salad (gluten free)

  • Nacho nation (section 117, 320, 423, 450): serves El Gordito nachos, The Hog-Chos, All Beef Hot Dogs, Asian nachos

  • DC Que (section 102, 405): Pulled Pork Sandwich, Pulled Chicken Sandwich, BBQ nachos, Caprese salad

  • The Grubtub (section 107, 115, 129, 136, 302, 323, 411, 435, 447): This convenient contraption combines food and drink into one handy item that makes it easy to carry with one hand.

On restrooms: despite the long lines, they are plenty and are kept clean.

FedExField Seating

Fans have reported that seating is a hit or miss. The higher seats tend to have better views with no obstruction compared to lower second-tier seats which may have a pole, concrete pillar or big cement pylon in your view.

The stadium has an older feel and the seats are a bit uncomfortable, so you might want to bring a cushion or consider upgraded seating.

There are two giant screens that can be seen from anywhere in the stadium for those who are having trouble viewing the field.

The overall atmosphere of the FedExField is that of high energy and very patriotic. If you’re a Commanders fan, or would like to experience a large-scale game or concert, this is the place to be.
