With a book by Winnie Holzman and music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, the ninth-longest running Broadway show in history continues to chug along, delighting audiences with its family-friendly twist on The Wizard of Oz. A mainstay at the legendary Gershwin Theater since 2003, Wicked has had productions in San Francisco, London, Tokyo and several U.S. and International tours.
The Lion King
The Lion King, with music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice, has been on Broadway even longer than Wicked. It is the third-longest running show on Broadway, premiering in 1997. Based on the Disney movie, The Lion King has delighted audiences to the tune of over $1 billion in box office receipts worldwide.
Another family-friendly production, Aladdin brings to life all your favorite characters from the 1992 Disney movie of the same name. Princess Jasmine, the Sultan, Jafar and Aladdin lead this exciting production featuring all your favorite songs from the movie, including “Friend Like Me” and “A Whole New World.”
This smash Broadway hit, with a hilarious book by Harvey Fierstein and memorable musical score by Cyndi Lauper, is the kind of feel-good musical Broadway theatergoers have come to expect on the Great White Way. Kinky Boots won six Tony awards in 2013, including Best Musical. The show was inspired by the true story of Londoner Charlie Price, who inherits a shoe factory and decides to make women’s shoes for men. What results is a hilarious night of musical delight that you’ll always remember.
Rounding out this week’s list is Hamilton, the rousing musical about the early days of the U.S. and founding father and political genius, Alexander Hamilton. This Tony award winning show is the brainchild of Lin-Manuel Miranda who wrote the book, music and lyrics. Hamilton debuted off Broadway in 2015, quickly moved to Broadway, and shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon.
