English singer-songwriter Gary Numan entered the music industry as the lead singer of the new wave band Tubeway Army. They released two albums before Numan went solo with his debut album, The Pleasure Principle, in 1979. He was mainstream during the 1970s and 1980s before winding down yet maintaining a cult following. Notable number one singles by Numan include “Are ‘Friends’ Electric?” and “Cars.” In 2017 he received an Ivor Novello Award, the Inspiration Award, from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors.
