Hairspray is an American musical that debuted on Broadway in 2002 and is based on the 1988 film by John Waters of the same name. The 1960’s style music by Marc Shaiman is a mix of “downtown” rhythm and blues and dance music. The plot surrounds the dreams of a young dancer and the injustices of American society in the 60’s. The stage adaptation won eight Tony Awards in 2003 after receiving an astonishing thirteen nominations. The musical has seen enormous success in London’s West End and internationally.
