Although this venue is known as PNC Bank Arts Center today, this was not always the case. Upon opening in the summer of 1968 this venue was called the Garden State Arts Center. During the early years of this venue the majority of the shows were based around classical music. But by the 90's this type of music was almost completely phased out as a way to expand and compete with the other venues in the area. This is when more popular music acts began to book events at the PNC Bank Arts Center.
