Complete Guide to the World Cup in Atlanta

Emma Hellmer | June 12, 2026

If you're in Atlanta or traveling to Atlanta for the FIFA World Cup, here's everything you should know before match day. Mercedes-Benz Stadium will host eight World Cup matches, including five group-stage games, two knockout-round matches, and a semifinal. While Atlanta didn't receive a United States group-stage match, it did land Spain, several intriguing underdog stories, and one of the tournament's final four matches.

Atlanta World Cup Games

June 15 - Group H: Spain vs. Cape Verde

Atlanta's first World Cup match features one of international football's traditional powers. Spain enters the tournament as a legitimate contender after reestablishing itself among Europe's elite nations. Cape Verde, meanwhile, is making one of the most significant appearances in its football history. While the matchup appears lopsided on paper, World Cup openers often produce memorable moments and passionate atmospheres. This is likely to be one of the most heavily attended group-stage matches in Atlanta.

June 18 - Group A: South Africa vs. Czechia

This may not be the highest-profile game on Atlanta's schedule, but it could be one of the most competitive. Czechia has a long football tradition and consistently produces technically strong teams, while South Africa returns to the World Cup looking to establish itself as a growing force in African football. For fans looking for affordable tickets, this could become one of Atlanta's best values.

June 21 - Group H: Spain vs. Saudi Arabia

Spain returns to Mercedes-Benz Stadium for what could be one of the city's premier group-stage fixtures. Saudi Arabia has become one of Asia's most consistent World Cup qualifiers and famously upset Argentina during the 2022 tournament. With Spain expected to bring large traveling support and neutral interest, demand for this match should be significantly higher than most other Atlanta group-stage games.

June 24 - Group C: Morocco vs. Haiti

This matchup has the potential to be one of Atlanta's most underrated games. Morocco captured global attention with its historic semifinal run in 2022 and has developed one of the most passionate supporter bases in international football. Haiti enters as one of the tournament's underdog stories and will likely bring enthusiastic support from across the United States. The atmosphere could rival some of the bigger-name fixtures despite lower ticket prices.

June 27 - Group K: DR Congo vs. Uzbekistan

Atlanta's final group-stage match features two nations hoping to make history. Neither side enters as a tournament favorite, but both will likely view this as a crucial opportunity to secure advancement. Depending on earlier results, this game could carry significant knockout-stage implications and become one of the more meaningful contests hosted in the city.

Atlanta's first knockout-round match dramatically raises the stakes. The losing team goes home, while the winner moves one step closer to lifting the World Cup trophy. Depending on how the groups unfold, this fixture could feature a traditional football power and become one of the most sought-after tickets in Georgia.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium Information

Mercedes-Benz Stadium is widely considered one of the premier sports venues in North America and should be one of the most comfortable World Cup stadiums during the summer. Unlike many World Cup venues that will deal with significant heat, Atlanta's stadium features a fully enclosed, climate-controlled environment and a retractable roof. The stadium's signature eight-panel roof and 360-degree Halo Board have become two of the most recognizable features of any venue in the United States.

How to Get to the Stadium

Mercedes-Benz Stadium is located in downtown Atlanta and is widely considered one of the easiest World Cup venues to access. The stadium is connected directly to MARTA rail service and sits within walking distance of several major hotels, restaurants, and entertainment districts.

Public transportation is strongly recommended on match days. MARTA trains provide direct access from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and much of the metro area. While parking is available throughout downtown, traffic congestion is expected to be substantial before and after matches, particularly for the semifinal. Fans who drive should arrive early and prepare for delays leaving the stadium area.

Bag Policy

Fans should expect strict security screening at all World Cup matches. Mercedes-Benz Stadium strongly recommends arriving without a bag whenever possible. If you need to bring one, only clear bags measuring 12" x 6" x 12" or smaller are permitted. This includes clear backpacks, clear tote bags, clear fanny packs, and clear drawstring bags. One-gallon clear plastic freezer bags are also allowed. Small non-clear clutch bags measuring 4.5" x 6.5" or smaller are permitted. All other bags will be denied entry. Clear bags will also be available to purchase for a fee.

Water Bottles and Hydration

One of the biggest concerns surrounding the 2026 World Cup has been stadium hydration policies. FIFA currently allows spectators to bring one factory-sealed disposable plastic water bottle up to 20 ounces into World Cup venues in the United States and Canada. Hard reusable bottles and metal bottles are not permitted. Fans can also expect hydration stations, cooling areas, and other heat-mitigation measures around World Cup venues.

Cashless Venue

Mercedes-Benz Stadium operates as a cashless venue. Concession stands, bars, merchandise locations, and parking purchases generally require a credit card, debit card, or mobile payment method. Fans should also expect World Cup tickets to be digital-only, so downloading tickets to your phone before arriving at the stadium is strongly recommended.

Arrive Early

Security lines for World Cup matches are expected to be significantly longer than a typical Falcons or Atlanta United game. Fans should plan to arrive at least 60 to 90 minutes before kickoff, particularly for Spain matches and the July 15 semifinal. Those driving should purchase parking in advance whenever possible, as road closures and traffic congestion around downtown Atlanta are expected throughout the tournament.

Least Expensive World Cup Atlanta Tickets

One advantage of Atlanta's schedule is that it lacks many of the tournament's traditional ticket-driving powers such as Brazil, Argentina, England, France, Germany, or the United States. As a result, several of Atlanta's group-stage matches have generally been priced below games in Los Angeles, New York/New Jersey, and Miami.

The least expensive Atlanta matches are expected to be:

  • DR Congo vs. Uzbekistan (June 27)
  • South Africa vs. Czechia (June 18)
  • Morocco vs. Haiti (June 24)

These matches should provide the full World Cup experience without the premium prices associated with games involving global powers. For comparison, matches featuring teams such as Argentina, Brazil, England, and the United States have routinely commanded significantly higher prices throughout North America.

Fans seeking the best combination of atmosphere and value should strongly consider Morocco vs. Haiti. Morocco supporters have earned a reputation as some of the most passionate in world football, and the match could generate an atmosphere that exceeds expectations relative to its ticket cost.

If your goal is simply to attend a World Cup match, the June 18, June 24, and June 27 fixtures may offer some of the best values in the entire tournament. Those games provide the same World Cup pageantry, international fan culture, and once-in-a-generation experience at a fraction of the cost of Atlanta's semifinal.
