The Washington NFL franchise took an unprecedented step in retiring the long-time “Redskins” moniker and will refer to themselves as the Washington Football Team for the upcoming season. This isn’t the final rebranding and naming of the team, but this serves as a placeholder until the organization adopts a new team name in the near future.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Washington will use generic uniforms featuring the original team colors and a helmet displaying golden numbers in place of the team’s prior logo when they take the field against the Philadelphia Eagles in week one.

This comes after years of Native Americans petitioning the team name to be changed as the old moniker is seen as a racial slur. With team owner Dan Snyder not acting swiftly enough to make a change after ongoing controversy, stadium sponsor FedEx expressed that the company would pull its name from the stadium if the team name wasn’t changed. With FedEx, major sponsors like Amazon, Walmart, and Nike have removed all team gear from their websites.

It's not known when the team will have their new name, but Washington head coach Ron Rivera believes that the rebranding process could take between 16-18 months to complete. Washington Football Team merchandise with the temporary name can be purchased through the National Football League website.
