Meet The Ataris

The Ataris were discovered by Vandals founder Joe Escalante in early 1996, when songwriter Kris Roe approached him at a Vandals concert. Impressed by Roe’s demo tape, Escalante asked him to put a band together for his record label (Kung Fu Records), and one year later their debut album, Anywhere But Here, was released. The group went on to record an EP and two more full-length albums, Blue Skies, Broken Hearts… Next 12 Exits (1999) and Let It Burn (2000) before cracking the charts with the release of End Is Forever in 2001. The album debuted at the number 14 spot on the Billboard Independent Albums chart. So Long, Astoria followed in 2003 serving as the band’s major breakthrough and debuting at the number 24 spot on the Billboard 200. So Long, Astoria spawned hit singles including “In This Diary,” “The Saddest Song,” and their famous cover of Don Henley’s “The Boys of Summer.” The Ataris’ cover of Henley’s recording is their highest charting single to date, reaching the number 20 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Astoria was followed by the release of one more full-length album, 2007’s Welcome the Night, which presented a much darker, rock-based sound from the group. They have since released a series of EPs and performed on the Vans Warped Tour. The Ataris have performed several genres of music throughout their career, mostly covering pop punk, emo, pop rock and skate punk.
