It’s Jimmy G’s Time

The Las Vegas Raiders have made a bold move this offseason, signing for veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo from the San Francisco 49ers. Garoppolo, who has a career record of 41-17 as a starter and led the 49ers to Super Bowl 54, will be the new face of the franchise in 2023. They think that Garoppolo can provide stability and leadership at the most important position on the field, something that they have lacked in recent years as the Raiders have only made it to the playoffs once since 2016 and have gone through a carousel of quarterbacks, including Derek Carr, Jarrett Stidham , and others.

Garoppolo will be reunited with his former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who is now the head coach of the Raiders. McDaniels was instrumental in developing Garoppolo during his time with the New England Patriots, where he won two Super Bowl rings as Tom Brady’s backup. McDaniels will try to recreate the same magic with Garoppolo in Las Vegas, using his innovative and versatile scheme.

He will also benefit from a talented supporting cast, featuring some of the best weapons in the league. The Raiders have one of the top offensive lines in the NFL, anchored by left tackle Kolton Miller and center Andre James. They also have a dynamic duo of receivers, such as Davante Adams, DeAndre Carter and Hunter Renfrow, to whom Garoppolo can fully trust they’ll catch whatever he throws at them.

Will this finally be the year the Raiders will finally make it far in the playoffs and finally make it to the Super Bowl after 21 seasons? The fans certainly hope so, as expectation is high in Las Vegas and they want to win the title at home.

How did the Las Vegas Raiders perform in the 2022 NFL Season?

The team had a disappointing performance in the 2022 NFL season, finishing with a 6-11 record, third in the AFC West division, and with no chance of reaching the playoffs.

They started the season with three straight losses, including a shutout defeat by the New Orleans Saints in week 8, and several blown leads throughout the season, including giving up leads by at least 17 points in three games. They also had some close games, like their 29-30 loss against the Chiefs in week 5 and a 16-17 loss against the Rams.

Some of their bright spots were players such as running back Josh Jacobs, who rushed for 1,653 yards and 12 touchdowns, and wide receiver Davante Adams, who led the team with 1,516 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. However, they also had some problems, such as quarterback Derek Carr, who threw for 3,522 yards, but also had 14 interceptions and only 24 touchdowns. He was benched in week 17 due to poor performance and replaced by Jarrett Stidham, who did not fare much better.

Despite a bad season, some performances were worthy of Pro Bowl appearance.  They had four players selected: wide receiver Davante Adams, quarterback Derek Carr (alternate), punter A. J. Cole III (alternate), and defensive end Maxx Crosby. Adams also made the All-Pro first team, along with kicker Daniel Carlson and running back Josh Jacobs.

Las Vegas Raiders Key Matchups in 2023

The 2023 season will be a challenging one for the Panthers, who will face some tough opponents in their quest for the playoffs. Some of the key matchups to watch are:

  • Week 3 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers: The Raiders will host the Steelers on Sunday Night Football, in a rematch of last year’s game that ended their playoff hopes. The Raiders will need to protect Jimmy Garoppolo from the Steelers’ defense and also stop their running game, which features Pro Bowler Najee Harris.
  • Week 4 at Los Angeles Chargers: The Raiders will face their division rivals on the road in a game that could start shaping the future of the AFC West standings. The Chargers have one of the best young quarterbacks in the league in Justin Herbert, who is a co-favorite to lead the league in passing yards, along with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. They will have to find a way to pressure Herbert and slow down his weapons, such as wide receiver Keenan Allen, as well as their defense, which features star pass rusher Joey Bosa and cornerback Derwin James.
  • Week 16 at Kansas City Chiefs: The Raiders will face the Chiefs again on Christmas Day, in a game that could decide the AFC West title. The Raiders will need to do their best and hope for some luck on their side, as they’ll need to deal with the hostile crowd and weather at Arrowhead Stadium, which is one of the toughest places to play in the NFL.
  • Week 18 vs. Denver Broncos: The Raiders will end their regular season with a home game against their divisional rival, the Broncos. The Raiders will need to win this game to secure their playoff spot and possibly a higher seed. The Raiders will also need to stop the Broncos’ quarterback, Russell Wilson, who is in his second season in Denver.
