The Broadway musical hit Wicked took the top spot on this week’s sales chart, knocking off last week’s leader, Aladdin. Wicked, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, tells the story of the friendship between the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch. Playing in the renovated Gershwin Theater, we predicted Wicked would make a strong push from last week’s third spot and it appears that’s exactly what happened.
Disney Musicals Still Strong
Despite Wicked’s surge to the top, it was another strong week for the two Disney Broadway productions: Aladdin slides in at number two and The Lion King moves to third. With Lion King celebrating 20 years and Aladdin on a North American tour in 2017, we wouldn’t be surprised if these three musicals kept jostling for the top spot.
None of that is to overlook the Hamilton juggernaut, which remains in the fourth spot this week. The 11-time Tony Award winner is also on tour, which should continue to keep it solidly in the top five. Rounding out the top five is Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, the musical based on War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy with music and lyrics by Dave Malloy.
Making a big jump up two spots this week is The Book of Mormon. From the same guys who invented South Park, along with Robert Lopez of Frozen fame, Mormon is on its second national tour.
