It was a HUGE week of movement among the top-selling Broadway shows this week as Wicked ticket sales surged back to the top. After falling out of the top five last week, the hit musical from Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman reclaimed the number one spot it last held on February 8.
Aladdin, which topped last week’s Broadway chart, came in just behind Wicked at number two. Behind it at three is a new entry into the top five: Paramour. Part of the Cirque du Soleil universe, Paramour tells the story of a small-town girl who hits it big during Hollywood’s “Golden Age.” Reviews for Paramour reveal it is even the first Broadway hit to use drones as props—for real!
The Lion King Returns, Hamilton Announces New Tour Stops
Also returning to the top five this week is The Lion King. Whether on Broadway or on the road, positive reviews of the Disney-inspired hit pour in from wherever it plays. Taking the fifth spot this week: Hamilton. With new tour stops being announced for Louisville and Providence in the next two years, expect Hamilton to be on this list for a long, long time.
Looking at the best-selling shows outside the top five, Sunset Boulevard and School of Rock both had big weeks. What do those two shows have in common? Both feature music from Broadway legend Andrew Lloyd Weber. Sunset Boulevard stars Glenn Close and plays at Palace Theatre in New York. School of Rock has all the songs from the movie plus 14 new ones from Weber.
