While Wicked was knocked out of the top 5 Broadway musical list last week, it’s back at the number one slot — just as buzz begins to grow surrounding the upcoming Wicked movie.
Wicked, the Movie: What to Expect
When news hit that Wicked the musical would be adapted for a feature film, fans listened. Having debuted in 2003, popularity for the musical hasn’t slowed down, which prompted plans for it to be transformed into a movie.
In May, composer Stephen Schwartz told fans they can expect their Broadway favorite hits to be included — yet he also told fans that two new songs (at least) would make their way to the big screen debut of Wicked.
The songs have not yet been created, so there’s no possibility of a potential “leak,” yet the promise itself has fans jazzed up for the movie debut. They’ll still have to wait quite a bit, as the movie is set to hit the screens in December 2019. Some have criticized the long wait — others say it’s a sign that creators will take their time and make sure it’s done right. Either way, until then, fans will have to flock to the theater, which is exactly what they’re doing.
Aside from the return of Wicked, let’s take a look at what’s new with the rest of the musicals in this week’s top five list:
The Lion King
A regular on the top 5 list, fans continue to flock to Lion King performances around the nation. While the musical has been popular for years, there’s something extra special about this year: It’s the 20th year anniversary.
The Lion King premiered on Broadway in November of 1997. Since then, it has been seen by more than 90 million people around the globe, according to BroadwayWorld.com.
As we announced in last week’s Broadway musical post, Aladdin is also making it to the big screen, this time as a live-action remake of the Disney movie. It’s almost full circle for the musical, which was originally adapted from the Disney classic. While the storyline and music of the movie helped it pick up and maintain success in the theater, the musical is now giving the plot another go on the big screen.
Maintaining its spot in the top 5, it’s clear fans can’t get enough of Aladdin, making the upcoming live-action movie a sure fire hit for director Jon Favreau.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Coming in at number 4, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is another fan favorite — week after week. New to the buzz this week is the new Broadway cast album, which hit the online market and likely provided the buzz that helped boost ticket sales. It will be available in the stores by June 23.
Including music from the original cast, longtime Charlie and the Chocolate Factory diehards have another reason to get pumped up. The Tony Award winning musical has been around for quite some time, yet fans continue to flock to the shows to glimpse into the wonderland. Now, the magic will continue far after the performance through the album…in cars, homes and everywhere people belt out their favorite songs when no one is listening.
Hamilton has been hit or miss on the top 5 list, although if it doesn’t make an appearance, it’s usually close. This week Hamilton survived the jabs made by the off-Broadway satirical musical, Spamilton. If anything, its place in the top 5 list shows it could have helped boost its publicity…as if it needs more publicity. The Tony Award winning musical has made fans of plenty throughout the U.S., setting it up to being a longtime classic for many years to come.
