After ceding Broadway’s top spot to Wicked for the past two weeks, Aladdin tickets reclaimed their ranking as the best-selling show on Broadway over the last seven days.
Aladdin’s rise led a week that saw big turnovers among the list of the top five best-selling shows. Hamilton, which had previously held solid in the fourth spot, shot up to second. The Great Comet, Dear Evan Hansen and A Bronx Tale rounded out the top five. Though their sales were still strong, The Lion King and last week’s number one, Wicked, fell out of the top five as the other productions surged forward.
Aladdin Tour Begins, Cast Change on Broadway
Aladdin last topped the Broadway charts in mid-January. It’s star, Adam Jacobs, played his last Broadway show as the Aladdin character on February 12; he’s moving to the traveling cast for its tour that begins April 11 at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago. It will then move on to runs in Cincinnati, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and Seattle. You can track the show and find dates for each stop at our special Aladdin tour page.
Back on Broadway, Joshua Dela Cruz will take Jacobs’ place for the time being after serving as his understudy. Producers have not confirmed a permanent replacement, but reports indicated Telly Leung will be named the new Broadway Aladdin.
As Hamilton continues its runs in New York and Chicago before branching out to San Francisco in March, word comes that it may get turned into a movie. Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda told The Hollywood Reporter that a movie is on the way, but not in the immediate future. Who would play the starring role on the big screen? “I don’t think I’m done with that role, by any stretch,” Miranda said.
