Situated on the blustery banks of Lake Erie near Buffalo, New York, New Era Field is known for the sporadic gusts that sweep down off the lake, making every field goal attempt that much more exciting to watch. The NFL's Buffalo Bills
have been battling howling winds at the open-air stadium since 1973.
Though it was designed specifically for NFL football, plenty of other events have happened on the field over the years. The first-ever NHL Winter Classic, which pitted the Buffalo Sabres
against the Pittsburgh Penguins
, took place there, along with some college football games. There have also been about 30 concerts held in the arena since it opened, beginning with the Band and Eric Clapton in 1974 and including performances by the Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead and One Direction.
One of the best parts of going to a Bills game is the tailgate before kickoff. The team's tailgates are known as some of the greatest in the NFL, and New Era Field Orchard Park does all it can to encourage the tradition. Parking lots open four hours before the game, and every spot is first come, first served. The stadium asks patrons to be respectful, occupy only one parking space, use plastic (not cans or glass) and extinguish all flames before heading into the game.
The venue fits more than 70,000 fans, with accessible seats available in the 100 and 300 levels. Concessions are widely available throughout the stadium, offering a mix of classic arena fare and international cuisine. The field is nearly 12 miles from downtown Buffalo, and there aren't many other dining options nearby, so you'll probably want to plan to eat there.
Also remember that New Era Field experiences not only strong winds but also cold temperatures. Check the weather before leaving and bring an extra layer.
Safety is the primary concern at Bills games, and everyone must pass a security checkpoint before entering. Attendees are allowed to bring in a single serving of sealed food or food stored in a 1 gallon (or smaller) plastic bag, as well as binoculars, clutch bags, cameras with lenses shorter than 6 inches and iPads or tablets. The stadium prohibits outside alcohol, inflatables, professional camera equipment, umbrellas and selfie sticks.
