Approaching its 100th-year anniversary, the Stephen Sondheim Theatre was actually built by and named for Henry Miller, a famous actor, director, producer and manager. Its glory days as a prominent theater ended in the 1960s when the Miller family sold the building and it was converted into a porn theater and nightclub. It eventually closed and was renovated, but its neo-Georgian facade, landmarked by the city, still remains. Today, the 57-story Bank of America Tower is located above the now-underground theater. In 2010, it was renamed the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in honor of the legendary composer and lyricist who was celebrating his 80th birthday.

During its heyday from the 1930s to the ’60s, some of Broadway’s most prominent actors and actresses performed on the theater’s stage including Leslie Howard, Douglas Fairbanks, Helen Hayes and Lillian Gish. Over the years, productions like Urinetown the Musical, Bye Bye Birdie, Anything Goes and The Trip to Bountiful have graced its stage. Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is the most recent show to have residence at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.

Located between 6th Avenue and Broadway, the theater is easily accessible by New York City’s public transportation system. A taxi stand is located a half block west on 8th Avenue, and there are many 24/7 parking garages and lots nearby. Bryant Park, the New York Public Library and Madame Tussauds are just a few popular attractions within walking distance.
