Rucker initially rose to fame for his role as front-man/singer and guitarist of the popular rock band Hootie and the Blowfish, an extremely successful band that rose to prominence in the 1990's and early 2000's, selling millions of albums. Following the breakup of the band, Darius Rucker went on to pursue his own solo career, exploring R&B and country music genres.
