Wicked & Aladdin Take Top Broadway Slots

Adam Young | March 15, 2017
The cast of Wicked proved themselves once again this week, taking the top slot for overall tickets sold for a Broadway show. Next up on the list? Aladdin, the Disney classic that’s become a mainstay in the weekly top 5 list.

Northeast Public Radio Host Bob Goepfert recently made sense of Wicked’s long-standing popularity, stating Wicked “is one of those Broadway musicals that lives up to its hype.” His review went on to describe Wicked as a “big, flashy show that tells an intriguing and clever story.” It doesn’t hurt that it’s also known for a few hit singles, including Popular and Defying Gravity.

The five-time Tony Award nominated Aladdin has consistently made the top 5 list, largely due to its famous singles, including A Whole New World, and popularity among a wide age range of Broadway musical fans — from kids to grandparents.

Following Aladdin is The Lion King and highly-acclaimed Hamilton. This comes in the midst of Hamilton’s announcement regarding its 2018 tour, which starts in Seattle in February 2018.

The Great Comet came in fifth this week, just holding on to its spot in the top 5 list. The top 10 list was rounded out by The Book of Mormon, Come from Away, Waitress and Sunday in the Park with George.
