Hamilton Falls Out Of Broadway’s Top Five Best Sellers

Hamilton out of top 5.
This week’s look at the top five shows on Broadway is stable at the top but there are big changes farther down the list.

Wicked remains in the position it’s held for well over a month: Number one. The Stephen Schwartz musical rules Broadway from The Gershwin Theatre, which is named after famed composers George and Ira Gershwin. Wicked began playing there in 2003 and, judging by these rankings, will stay there for a long, long time.

The Disney duo of Aladdin and The Lion King follow as the second and third best-selling musicals, respectively. Aladdin was the last show to hold the number one spot prior to Wicked, but that was in early February.

After that, things get interesting.

The Phantom of the Opera rockets up the rankings to number four this week. Playing in The Majestic Theatre, Phantom of the Opera is the longest-running Broadway show…ever. It’s 29-year run is unprecedented in musical history. Around the world it has played to almost 150 million people.

The show recently saw Rodney Ingram join in the role of Raoul (Ingram debuted on Broadway with Aladdin in 2015).

Following at number five is School of Rock. Based, of course, on the movie, School of Rock has music by Andrew Lloyd Weber with lyrics by Glenn Slater. Weber has been busy lately: He has four shows on Broadway. CATS, The Phantom of the Opera and Sunset Boulevard join School of Rock to make up Weber’s quartet.

So that’s the top five for this week. Notice anything missing? Hamilton! Despite having another strong week, the musical juggernaut fell out of the top five. Don’t take that as a sign that the Broadway smash is slowing down, however. It just added a second touring production, which will debut in 2018.
