Top Concert Performers & The Summer Anthems That Made Them Famous

Adam Young | June 30, 2017
Summer anthems.
The popularity of an artist is often defined by their ability to crank out a "summer song" that dominates the airwaves. The artists behind the top concerts of summer 2017 are certainly no stranger to sizzling summer hits. In a way, it only makes sense that they're now topping the list, in the midst of summer ticket sales.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry is arguably the queen of summer anthems. When her 2008 album, One of the Boys, was released on June 17, a summer soundtrack for millions around the world was born. The first hit single from the album, “I Kissed a Girl,” went straight to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts — and that certainly wasn’t her only hit of the summer. “Hot n Cold” also took off in the summer of ’08.

In May 2010, just in time for pop fans to memorize the lyrics for summer, Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” hit single took off. By August, her entire Teenage Dream album was all the rage, providing even more hits and debuting at the number one spot for Billboard’s top albums. The album also included hits “Teenage Dream” and “Firework.”

In 2013, Katy Perry’s PRISM album was released. While the album went up for grabs in October, its hit single “Roar” debuted in August, allowing it to technically be deemed a summer release. Her most recent album, Witness, was released in June of 2017.

Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars became famous from singles like “Just the Way You Are,” which happened to drop in August of 2010. “Grenade” followed in September. “Marry You” also dropped in August of 2010.

Bruno Mars has a reputation of waiting until the fall to release albums, leaving him somewhat out of the summer sun anthem category — with singles like "Uptown Funk" being released in November of 2010. “The Lazy Song” didn’t make it to the airwaves until February (of 2011).  24K Magic, the album, was released in November of 2016.

Lady Gaga

The Fame, Lady Gaga’s first album, was released in August of 2008. Its hit singles, “Just Dance” and “Poker Face” not only propelled Gaga into the spotlight, but also gave pop fans around the world a few new summer jams.

In May of 2011, Lady Gaga released Born This Way, the album — and a host of new summer anthems were born. Perfect for the summer months, the pop/dance song “Born This Way” gained plenty of buzz, along with “The Edge of Glory” and “You And I.” The album itself rose to the top 5 in the top Billboard 200.

Her third album, Art Pop, didn’t launch until the fall of 2013, but its hit single “Applause” was released in August of 2013, classifying it technically as a late summer hit. Her 2016 album, Joanne, was released in October — its hit single “Million Reasons” didn’t debut until just one month prior.

Ed Sheeran

If you were listening to the radio in the summer of 2011, you heard “The A Team” — a lot. Music lovers around the world that summer were stuck with it in their heads. Ed Sheeran’s widespread fame may have started then, but it sure didn’t end.

Ed Sheeran’s latest album, Divide, debuted in March of 2017 — that album included “Shape of You.” Only days into summer, the song has already invaded hearts and minds, making it a likely summer anthem for plenty.

Harry Styles

This spring, “Sign of the Times” went to number on on the Billboard charts. It was the first time former One Direction band member Harry Styles held that spot, marking a turning point for the now one-man-band. Now a favorite among many, “Sign of the Times” has moved into the summer anthem category. It released this past April.

In 2013, Harry Styles enjoyed a few summer anthems along with his then-band, One Direction. “One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)” dropped in March of 2013 and climbed to the Billboard Hot 100 top 20. In April of 2012, “What Makes You Beautiful” became a hit, making it a popular summer song that ranked number 4 on Billboard’s list.  In August 2013, “Best Song Ever” debuted and reached the number 2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
