Clearly, one can't go wrong with taking a classic children's tale and turning it on its head by telling the story from its decidedly darkest element: the witches' point of view. At the Gershwin Theatre since 2003, Wicked rocks the No. 1 spot yet again this week, making this favorite among kids and adults alike one for the books.
The Lion King
Can you feel the love tonight? The Lion King moves up one spot to No. 2 this week, proving that this nearly 25-year-old coming-of-age tale can still really tug at the heartstrings — because who could resist Simba and the great king he grows up to be?
When Aladdin was granted three wishes from the magical genie, one of those wishes must not have been to stay at the top, because this show sunk to No. 3 from the No. 2 spot this week. Still, audiences prove it’s among their favorites. There's no escaping the mystic allure of one Arabian princess who finds her prince in the most unlikely of places.
The Phantom of the Opera
The Phantom of the Opera is still sitting pretty at No. 4 this week as audiences continue to flock to the Majestic Theatre for this tragic and bizarrely beautiful love story conceived by the great Andrew Lloyd Webber and his partners, Charlie Hart and Richard Stilgoe. Together with a soundtrack for the ages, this operatic masterpiece (based on a novel by Frenchman Gaston Leroux) has wowed audiences all over the world since the 1925 film version. With its stage debut happening over 60 years later in London, The Phantom of the Opera went on to become the pride of New York when it hit Broadway in 1988.
A production that once upon a time featured Bette Midler (now featuring Donna Murphy as Dolly Levi), Hello, Dolly! still has audience appeal, grabbing a top 5 spot this week. With its home at Shubert Theatre, the four-time Tony Award-winning musical has wowed fans since arriving back on Broadway this year after a 22-year hiatus. It opened on Broadway for the first time at St. James Theatre on Jan. 16, 1964, but this empowering tale of a matchmaker has audiences gathering once again. It’s so nice to see you back where you belong!
