It’s fitting that the Sabres will be playing. During the first-ever Winter Classic 10 years ago, the Sabres lost in a 2-1 shootout against the Pittsburgh Penguins in front of more than 71,000 die-hard fans braving the elements at Buffalo’s Ralph Wilson Stadium (now known as New Era Stadium), home to the NFL’s Buffalo Bills.
The Sabres and the Rangers have a storied past. They have played each other in the regular season 177 times since 1970 and faced each other twice in the Stanley Cup playoffs, with Buffalo coming out on top both times. The outdoor game on Jan. 1 will continue the NHL tradition of a marquee outdoor game on New Year’s Day, a game that fans around North America and the world have embraced and celebrated for the past 10 years.
Citi Field is home to Major League Baseball’s New York Mets and has held countless memorable events, including the World Series, the MLB All-Star Game, and concerts by Beyoncé, Paul McCartney and Fleetwood Mac. It is the sixth time this special game will be held in a baseball stadium, with prior appearances at historic baseball parks such as Wrigley Field, Fenway Park and Busch Stadium.
