Metallica Drive-In Theater Concert - Locations & Details
With concert venues across the world still closed, bands and musicians have been flexing their creative muscles to come up with unique ways that they can still connect with their fans.
Metallica is the latest group to share their efforts, announcing a one-night only concert event set to take place in drive-in theaters across North America on August 29th.
The show, which marks Metallica’s first concert in almost a year, will be recorded at an undisclosed location near the group’s Northern California home base and will be mixed by their award-winning production team. The film will feature an opening performance by fellow rock group Three Days Grace, as well as highlights spanning Metallica’s 40-year career.
The veteran rockers shared the exciting news via social media on Monday as part of Encore’s Drive-In Nights series.
"In all of rock, it literally doesn’t get any bigger than Metallica,” Walter Kinzie, CEO of Encore Live, said in a statement.
“Over the course of their career these guys have completely redefined rock [...] We’ve seen with our first two Encore Nights Drive-In concerts that fans absolutely dig the drive-in experience and we know that Metallica is going to blow the top off of this thing and take it to a whole new level."

Who are Metallica?
Heavy metal rockers Metallica emerged in the early 1980s from Los Angeles, CA. The band was formed by vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich. Metallica is known for the fast-paced tempos and aggressive musicianship, making them one of the founding “big four” bands of thrash metal (alongside acts including Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer).
In their early years, Metallica earned a growing fanbase through the underground music community. The band has released a total of ten studio albums over the course of their wildly successful, 40-year career, including mega hits Master of Puppets (1986) and Metallica (1991), the latter of which achieved substantial commercial success, becoming the best-selling album of the SoundScan era.
Metallica have won nine Grammy Awards out of 23 nominations, and their last six albums have debuted atop the Billboard 200 consecutively. They are ranked as one of the most commercially successful bands of all time, having sold over 125 million albums worldwide as of 2018.
