Calling all fighting fans! Are you ready for one of the biggest events of the year? History can be made on October 6th at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas when Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov squares off with “The Notorious” Connor McGregor for the Lightweight Championship.
In April 2018, Dana White made an announcement that McGregor was to be stripped of the Lightweight Championship belt for not defending his title once in almost two full calendar years. White also announced that the winner of the Max Holloway and Khabib Nurmagomedov fight would replace McGregor as Lightweight Champion of the sport. With Holloway being ruled unfit for the fight, he was pulled from the main event, which lead to Nurmagomedov claiming the belt in easy fashion over Al Iaquinta. With Nurmagomedov’s victory, fighting fans from across the world had all eyes set to a blockbuster bout between “The Notorious” one and “The Eagle.”
In early August, an announcement was made that the polarizing McGregor would make his return to fighting in October against Nurmagomedov, making the bout one of the biggest main events in fighting history.
McGregor last fought against Eddie Alvarez in November 2016, where he was crowned champion after a second-round knockout, resulting in “The Notorious” holding two championship belts simultaneously at the time and becoming the first to do so.
McGregor traded his pair of fighting gloves for a set of boxing gloves temporarily in 2017, calling out the 50-0, undefeated champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather in one of the biggest boxing spectacles the sports world has ever seen. Though McGregor suffered a technical knock-out and lasted ten rounds in the ring with Mayweather, he earned himself a nice consolation prize of $30 million dollars just for stepping foot in the ring.
“The Eagle” enters the fight with the longest undefeated streak in mixed martial arts history. The two-time world champion has proved over time that he is a force to be reckoned with, dominating the sport with no blemishes on his perfect 26-0 record.
Multiple pundits and experts believe Nurmagomedov is the man to beat in this fight, given he has a two-inch height advantage over the Irishman. Though, when media have underestimated McGregor in the past, he’s been known to shock the world time after time as the underdog.
With other match-ups on the fight card, this battle between McGregor and Nurmagomedov is one all fight fans across the globe will tune in to watch. With McGregor not fighting since 2016, taking on a machine like Nurmagomedov is a tall task. “The Eagle” has the height and the build that gives him a physical advantage against McGregor. If Nurmagomedov takes McGregor to the ground, McGregor will have a tough time coping with the physicality of the Russian. However, McGregor has heavy hands and a long reach that he can use to his advantage. If McGregor can keep Khabib standing up, McGregor’s chances of winning rise immensely.
Prediction: Nurmagomedov over McGregor by knock out in the third round.
