Major League Baseball Tickets Reign Over the Resale Market

MLB leads top 20.
Major League Baseball tickets reign over the Sports Hot 20 top sellers again this week, taking 19 of the top 20 spots. The only event outside America’s pastime is soccer’s International Friendly series with Mexico. Within the top five we’ve seen changes among the teams seeing the most action on the resale market, so let’s jump in.

New On Top: Kansas City Royals

The Royals vaulted from the fourth spot up to number one this week, overtaking the Toronto Blue Jays who fell to the second spot. The Los Angeles Dodgers held steady at number three while the Texas Rangers made their first appearance in the top five, followed by the St. Louis Cardinals. That means the Colorado Rockies and New York Yankees are out of the top five, but don’t worry. The Rockies are still doing well on top of the NL West standings and the Yankees have Aaron Judge.

With Texas and St. Louis being newcomers to the top five, here’s a closer look at what’s propelling them up the standings.

Texas On a Hot Streak

Our data covers the days of May 9 through May 15 and the Rangers won every game they played during that span. That hot streak is no doubt exciting fans who want to get a look at their team to see if they can challenge the rival Houston Astros who are running away with the division at this point.

Cardinals: All they do is win

The Cardinals didn’t go undefeated last week, but they came close having lost only once. But their hot streak goes back farther than that: They have only lost three games so far in May. After getting off to a bad start the red birds are 18-6 over the past 30 days and on top of the NL Central. At 18-19, the Chicago Cubs sit in fourth place in the division, but only 3.5 games behind their rival St. Louis. And, it’s still May.

The rest of baseball

Outside the top five, the Yankees, Cubs and Red Sox still show strong popularity with fans. Mid-market teams like the Minnesota Twins and Milwaukee Brewers are also seeing a boost from their teams’ strong starts. Like we mentioned last week, fans in Atlanta are eager for tickets to see SunTrust Park.

Soccer, Hockey & NBA Playoffs Still Hot

The International Friendly series with Mexico is the only non-baseball event to make the Hot 20, doing so for the second week in a row. NHL and NBA playoff tickets are showing strong in the markets where teams are still active. Ottawa leads the way in hockey while the San Antonio Spurs are the top resale ticket in the NBA. Just behind them are the Warriors, so we’ll see how that shakes out as the NBA’s Western Conference Finals unfolds.

Looking farther outside sports played with balls and pucks, WWE had a great week with strong demand for Raw, the SummerSlam Heatwave Tour and WWE: Live. Monster Jam and the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series were also strong.

Don’t Look Now…But Football is Coming

More than any other sport, football knows how to keep itself relevant year-round. We’re already starting to see sales for the most popular teams like New England, Green Bay and Kansas City creeping up the charts. It may be a bit before they break into the Hot 20, but there’s no doubt that #FootballIsComing.
