John Frusciante Rejoins Red Hot Chili Peppers

Red Hot Chili Peppers took to social media over the weekend to share they would be parting ways with guitarist Josh Klinghoffer and reuniting with the musician he replaced – John Frusciante.

The reunion will mark Frusciante’s third stint with RHCP. He initially joined the lineup in 1988 following the death of guitarist Hillel Slovak, going on to appear on their 1989 album Mother’s Milk and 1991’s Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

Frusciante parted ways with the group mid-tour in support of Blood Sugar Sex Magik, returning six years later and appearing on albums including Californication, By the Way, and Stadium Arcadium. He quit the band again in 2009 during their extended hiatus, and was replaced by Klinghoffer, who remained a member of RHCP through their next two albums, I’m With You and The Getaway.

“Josh is a beautiful musician who we respect and love,” Red Hot Chili Peppers shared in a post to Instagram. “We are deeply grateful for our time with him, and the countless gifts he shared with us.”

The band added, “We also announce, with great excitement and full hearts, that John Frusciante is rejoining our group.”

So far, RHCP have booked two shows for 2020 – May 15 at Alabama’s Hangout Festival and May 24 at the Boston Calling fest.

Who are Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Red Hot Chili Peppers emerged from Los Angeles, CA in the early 1980s, breaking down barriers and creating a new musical style that was uniquely their own. With a winning combination of funk and punk rock, RHCP have made a name for themselves as one of the best-selling bands of all time, selling over 80 million albums worldwide. They have garnered a total of sixteen Grammy Awards (winning six) over the course of their career, and are the most successful band in alt-rock radio history, currently holding records for most number one singles (with 13), most cumulative weeks at number one (85), and most top-ten song on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart (25). RHCP have released eleven full-length albums to date, their most recent being 2016’s The Getaway. They are currently in the process of recording their twelfth studio album, which is expected to drop sometime in early 2020. RHCP currently consists of founding members Anthony Kledis and Michael Balzary (aka Flea), longtime drummer Chad Smith, and guitarist John Frusciante. They have been Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees since 2012.
