Wicked Starring Jennifer Dinoia
Topping Broadway again this week is Wicked, with Jennifer Dinoia in the starring role of Elphaba. Dinoia is no stranger to the production: She’s performed for the musical in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Australia and South Korea. In the current Broadway production, she took over for Rachel Tucker in 2016. Jennifer says it takes half an hour to apply all that green makeup.
Aladdin, Played By Joshua Dela Cruz
Joshua Dela Cruz plays the title role in Aladdin, the number two musical in this week’s rankings. Dela Cruz took over for Adam Jacobs, who left for the touring production earlier this year. He’s also played in King and I with TV and movie star Lou Diamond Phillips. Aladdin has become such a mainstay in the top five that it’s easy to forget the current Broadway version is only 3 years old.
The Lion King Starring Jelani Remy
Moviegoers, music lovers and Broadway fans know the story of The Lion King, which helps keep it near the top of this list every week. The current Simba, Jelani Remy, once spent his birthday money on a cassette tape of the movie soundtrack. He was 8. Now, 19 years later, it’s looking more and more like a great investment.
James Barbour is The Phantom of the Opera
If you haven’t seen the number four best-selling musical, The Phantom of the Opera, chances are you’ve seen its star, James Barbour. He’s done TV work on shows ranging from “Sex and the City” to “Just Shoot Me” and he’s collaborated with musicians like Elton John. So he’s a big deal. That’s how he landed the lead role on the longest-running musical in the history of Broadway.
Hamilton Starring Javier Munoz
After Lin-Manuel Miranda left his Broadway smash, Javier Munoz stepped into the role as Alexander Hamilton. Unfortunately, an injury has Munoz on hiatus for the time being and Jevon McFerrin is taking his place. If the name McFerrin sounds familiar, well, it should. Jevon’s dad is musical legend Bobby McFerrin. So if you have tickets for the hit show, don’t worry. Be happy!
