Who Is Billy Idol?
Billy Idol skyrocketed to stardom in the early ‘80s thanks largely in part to the then brand-new TV network, MTV. Before becoming an international crossover star, Idol got his start in London in the 1970s, emerging from the city’s punk rock scene as a member of Generation X. He embarked on a solo career with the arrival of the 1980s, becoming one of the most prominent artists as the head of the MTV-driven “Second British Invasion” in the US.
Idol’s self-titled solo debut arrived in 1982, instantly achieving commercial success thanks to hit singles and videos for “Dancing with Myself” and “White Wedding.” Rebel Yell followed in 1983, bringing with it more of the same chart-topping success with singles like “Rebel Yell” and “Eyes Without a Face.” Rebel Yell would earn a double platinum certification, selling over two million copies in the US. Idol has since release six additional albums including the platinum certified Whiplash Smile (1986) and his platinum-selling greatest hits album Idol Songs: 11 of the Best (1988). He spent most of the 1990s out of the public eye, eventually making a comeback with the release of Devil’s Playground in 2005, followed by Kings & Queens of the Underground in 2014.
