Big Shakeup in Broadway Sales: Aladdin Topples Wicked

Adam Young | June 2, 2017
Aladdin beats out Wicked.
There’s been a big shakeup in the theater world: Aladdin Broadway tickets today knocked Wicked out of the number one spot for top-selling Broadway tickets. It’s the first time Aladdin came out on top in our weekly rankings since mid-February. Following Aladdin in this week’s top five is The Lion King, another Disney smash hit. Phantom of the Opera took the third spot, a slight improvement over last week. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory also moved up one to number four, and Hamilton made a return to the top five, coming it at number five. Hello, Dolly! is nominated for 10 Tony Awards, but it just missed the top five. As did Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, which earned 12 Tony nominations.

Here is our full list of top-selling Broadway musicals:

  1. Aladdin
  2. The Lion King

We spend most of our time at Event Tickets Center talking about the top five Broadway shows, but this week we feel like giving you one detail about the shows that come later down the list:

  • The first version of Hello, Dolly! hit Broadway in 1964.

  • Meg Ryan voiced the character Grand Duchess Anastasia in the 1997 Hollywood movie that inspired the musical.

  • The Great Comet is actually a musical adaptation of War and Peace.

  • Trey Parker and Matt Stone helped write The Book of Mormon, you might have heard of their TV show: South Park.

  • Almost 7,000 airline passengers were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, after 9/11, doubling its population and inspiring the musical Come From Away.

  • Waitress stars singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles. She’s the one who won’t write you a love song.

  • Dear Evan Hansen has a full U.S. Tour set to begin in October 2018.

  • A Doll’s House Part 2 is the youngest show on the list having opened on April 27, 2017.

  • Hollywood regulars Laura Linney and Cynthia Nixon alternate the same two roles between each other in every performance of The Little Foxes.

Aladdin Live-Action Production Coming

Our top five list isn’t the only place Aladdin made news this week. Word leaked out online that Disney is planning a live-action remake of the hit movie. This version will be directed by Guy Ritchie. There’s a live-action version of The Lion King in the works as well under director Jon Favreau. Don’t rush to get in line at the movie theater though, Lion King doesn’t come out until 2019 and there’s no timetable for Ritchie’s Aladdin.
