2017 Tony Award Nominees: What You Need To Know

Adam Young | May 2, 2017
What to know about the Tony's.
The 2017 Tony Award nominees have been announced and we’ve got the details.

The leading nominee is Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, hauling in an impressive 12 nominations. The Great Comet is up for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume and Best Score. Josh Groban, who plays Pierre, is up for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. His co-star Denee Benton is also up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role. This is the first Broadway role for both of them and their first Tony nomination, so not a bad debut.

Right on The Great Comet’s heels is Hello, Dolly! It earned a whopping 10 Tony nominations, including Best Revival (it first appeared in 1964) and Best Scenic Design. On an individual level, David Hyde Pierce and Bette Midler each earned their respective nominations for Best Performance in a Leading Role.

With 22 nominations combined, it’s no surprise why The Great Comet and Hello, Dolly! are consistently among the top 10 best-selling Broadway musicals. Other musicals raking in the nominations include Dear Evan Hansen with nine, A Doll’s House, Part 2 with eight, and Come From Away with seven.

You’ll have to wait a few weeks to learn the winners. The Tony Awards are scheduled for June 11. Kevin Spacey, himself a Tony Award winner for Best Featured Actor in 1991’s Lost in Yonkers, will host from Radio City Music Hall. You can watch them live on CBS.
