Meet Arlo Guthrie
Arlo Guthrie is an American folk music artist from Washington, Massachusetts. His music is reminiscent of his father Woody Guthrie, in that they both sing of protest and rising against social injustices. Guthrie’s is a classic folk sound, full of plucky guitars and bluesy rhythms.
Guthrie’s biggest success, and one that defines his legacy, was his rambling 18 minute 34 second opus “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree”. The single, released in 1967, is (according to Guthrie) a biographical account of his own draft, examination, and rejection based on a misdemeanor he committed on Thanksgiving Day, 1965. The song’s popularity with the youth of the 60’s kept Guthrie on practically every radio station in the country. American radio stations still play “Alice’s Restaurant” every Thanksgiving to this day, in a sort of counterculture holiday tradition.
