Located in the heart of Manhattan, the historic Ambassador Theatre is one of Broadway’s many gems. One of six theaters built by the famed Shubert family in the early 1920s, the building boasts a simple exterior and Herbert Krapp-designed interior with elegant plasterwork. It’s situated diagonally on its relatively small lot, and the auditorium features a hexagonal shape intended to optimize its square footage, a feature that sets it apart from other theaters in the area.

This historic venue has played host to a variety of classic productions. During its first decade, it was committed to operettas and musical comedies, including its inaugural performance of The Rose Girl in 1921. Over the years, it’s been home to Eubie! featuring Gregory Hines, Ain’t Misbehavin’ starring Nell Carter, and more recently, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Topdog/Underdog and the revival of Chicago.

Located on West 49th Street, the Ambassador Theatre is easily accessible by subway, bus or car. Hotels, restaurants and bars are plentiful in the area, and visitors are guaranteed to find a favorite dish, a refreshing cocktail or a comfortable room within a few blocks.

Most seating in the Ambassador Theatre is available in the orchestra and mezzanine sections, although a limited number of box seats and standing-room-only tickets are available. Wheelchair-accessible seating is available in the orchestra. Children under age 4 are not admitted to performances. The venue does provide concessions for purchase; outside food and drinks are not allowed. Additionally, cameras, recording devices, cellphones, beepers and other electronic devices may not be used during performances.
