Al Jarreau

Alwin Lopez Jarreau, better known as Al Jarreau, is an American jazz and soul musician born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1940. His musical career began in the late sixties, but his true affection was born from the church.

Raised by a minister father and church pianist mother, Jarreau started singing as a youngster in church concerts and at church benefits. He later went on to earn a master’s degree in vocational rehabilitation, and moonlighted with a jazz trio during a rehabilitation counselor position in San Francisco. After collaborating with an acoustic guitarist and becoming a star attraction at a Bay Area nightclub, Jarreau decided to set forth on a full-time singing career. He recorded eighteen studio albums and compilations between 1975 and 2009, as well as four live albums from 1977 to 2012. Jarreau was awarded multiple Grammy Awards and nominations, and was induced in 2001 into the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
