Meet Al Green
Al Green is a singer/songwriter best known for releasing a string of smash hit songs throughout the early 1970s. Often known as The Reverend Al Green, he bridged the gap between deep southern soul and smooth urban Philly soul, incorporating elements of gospel and his signature wails. Green’s most popular hits include tracks like “Take Me to the River,” “Tired of Being Alone,” “I’m Still In Love With You,” “Love and Happiness,” and his signature song, “Let’s Stay Together.” Green is considered one the best soul singers in music history. His distinct style made him the most popular and influential soul artist of the 1970s, influencing not only up and coming artists, but fellow veteran musicians like Marvin Gaye. At the height of his popularity, Green joined the ministry in the mid-70s, and by the 1980s was focusing solely on gospel music. Near the end of the decade and into the early 1990s he intermittently returned to R&B music, however his position as a religious performer remained his number one focus. Green was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. He has been referred to as “one of the most gifted purveyors of soul music” and “The Last of the Great Soul Singers.”
